Salt therapy

What is it, what it does, and why it works.

Salt therapy — also known as halotherapy — is the practice of breathing in fine dry salt particles dispersed into the air. It has roots in the salt mines of Eastern Europe, where miners were found to have remarkably healthy respiratory systems despite their environment.

Today, purpose-built salt rooms replicate those conditions in a controlled, comfortable setting. The Salt Room is Singapore’s first active halotherapy studio — meaning our salt is generated and dispersed mechanically using a halogenerator, not simply placed decoratively in the room.

Active vs passive salt therapy

This distinction matters. A passive salt room uses salt bricks, panels, or lamps for ambience and trace ionic effect. An active salt room uses a halogenerator to crush pharmaceutical-grade salt into microscopic particles (1–5 microns) that are then dispersed into the air you breathe.

At The Salt Room, we do both. Our walls feature Himalayan salt bricks. And our halogenerator ensures the air itself is doing the work.

Salt Therapy

/ What happens during a session

You enter the room. You sit, lie down, or settle in. The air carries fine salt particles — dry, odourless, and invisible. Your airways receive them. Your body responds.

Most guests notice a deep sense of calm within the first few minutes. Many fall asleep. The engineered environment — amber light, controlled temperature, low humidity, optional soundscape — supports this process and extends it.

A typical session is 45 minutes. We also offer extended experiences from 60–90 minutes.

/ What salt therapy is said to support

Salt therapy is not a medical treatment and The Salt Room does not make clinical claims. However, a growing body of international research and a large community of practitioners reference halotherapy in relation to:

– Respiratory ease — clearer breathing, reduced congestion
– Skin comfort — particularly for dry or sensitised skin
– Stress reduction and nervous system regulation
– Improved quality of rest and sleep
– Mental clarity and reduced fatigue

We have found, consistently, that guests leave the room feeling lighter — mentally and physically — than when they arrived.

/ Is it safe?

Active dry salt therapy at the concentrations used in halotherapy studios is considered safe for most people. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and drug-interaction free. Children, older adults, and guests with respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies have all used salt rooms with reported benefit.

We recommend that guests with active respiratory illness, open wounds, or serious cardiac conditions consult their doctor before visiting. If you are unsure, reach out and we will guide you.

BENEFITS

What the salt room does for you.

The Salt Room was designed around a single question: what does a person who is exhausted, overstimulated, and running on reduced capacity actually need?

The answer shaped everything. The engineered environment. The halotherapy. The silence. The amber light. The choice to keep the space small.

Mental rest

The nervous system is designed to recover. It needs low stimulation, a sense of safety, and time. Our environment is built to deliver exactly that — fewer inputs, warmer light, calibrated quiet. Guests routinely fall asleep within the first few minutes of a session, not because they are bored, but because the room gives the brain actual permission to stop.

Respiratory ease

Fine salt particles in the air have a hygroscopic effect — they attract and absorb moisture and inflammation in the airways. Guests with dust sensitivity, mild asthma, allergies, or post-illness congestion have found consistent relief. Many people simply notice they breathe more easily when they leave than when they arrived.

Stress reduction

The combination of halotherapy and the engineered space has a measurable effect on the body’s stress response. Heart rate settles. Shoulders lower. The feeling that something urgent is about to happen — the ambient hum most of us carry — quiets.

Skin comfort

Himalayan salt is mineral-rich and mildly antibacterial. Guests with dry skin, eczema, or sensitised complexions have reported improved texture and reduced irritation following regular sessions. This is a slow benefit — cumulative over visits — rather than an immediate visible change.

Better sleep

Sleep quality improves for many guests who visit regularly. The rest achieved inside a session appears to carry forward — a recalibration that makes the hours after a session easier, and the nights that follow deeper.

A genuine pause

Perhaps the most reported benefit is the simplest: the feeling of having had a real break. Not a distracted one. Not a scroll-through-your-phone one. A full, present, uninterrupted stop. Many guests describe it as the first time in a long while they felt truly off.

The engineered environment

Salt therapy alone would be valuable. But we have layered the experience. Every element of the room — temperature, humidity, light spectrum, acoustic design — is calibrated to support the deepest possible rest within the session. We do not go into the specifics of our engineering. But you will feel the difference.
